At Exmoor Fisheries we endeavour to improve farming production methods. Therefore we have a research facility, which is available for both student and commercial use. The facility is housed within our onsite hatchery providing 24hr care and attention resulting in optimum trial efficiency. We have a laboratory on site where sample analysis can take place, such as histology and microbiology. Please contact us for more information regarding availability of our facility as well as individual requirements that may be necessary. See below for the trial facility specifics.
Samuel Voller - BSc Hons MRes Marine Biology, PHD Aquaculture Nutrition
During my PhD programme with the Aquatic Animal Nutrition and Health Research Group at Plymouth University, an 8 week feed trial was carried out at Exmoor Fisheries utilising the 12 tank research system. Experimental diets containing a plant based protein source and a prebiotic were fed during the trial. Samples were taken for molecular and histological analysis at the conclusion. Bi-weekly weighing of tank biomass throughout the trial provided reliable growth performance data, achieving excellent FCR’s and SGR’s. The on site labororatory facilities were key in the sampling process and enabled aseptic microbiological sampling in the farm setting. Dave Fullers expertise in setting the system up was key to the trial success. Coupled with Dan Youngs knowledge of the required level of control and replicability required for the growth trial was invaluable. The staff ensured that the day to day husbandry was carried out to the highest level between sampling periods. The working environment also made the whole procees of working with Exmoor Fisheries very enjoyable.
The facility has been tailor made to provide optimum trial conditions for both the wellbeing of the fish and the eligibility of the data collected.
